Online Gambling
Online gambling is any kind of gambling conducted on the internet. This includes a variety of different games (casino games, poker, sports betting, etc) that allows accessibility through the use of a mobile smart phone, computer, or any device that has an internet connection.
Since 2021, Canada saw a significant shift in the online gambling market when federal legislation allowed for single event sports betting. This resulted in a sudden increase in opportunities to legally gamble. During this time the world was in the midst of a global pandemic–many Canadian citizens in their vulnerability turned to online gambling instead of traveling to the casinos and VLTs.
According to Canada’s criminal code, Canada only prohibits gambling at an establishment that is not owned or licensed by the provincial government. It is estimated that there are 1,200 to 1,400 gray-market websites and apps that provide casino type games along with other forms of gambling activities to Canadian citizens. If a player decides to utilize the gray-market sites, disputes and issues they may encounter are often left unresolved as these platforms are not regulated in Saskatchewan and Canada. In 2022, Saskatchewan launched its official online gambling platform.
Like casinos and bars, online gambling websites and apps have a minimum age requirement to verify identification.
